Gary Neville admitted “I’ve never seen a pitch in this condition” after Valencia’s 1-0 defeat to Athletic Bilbao at a rain-sodden San Mames on Thursday.
Raul Garcia’s lone strike fired Athletic to a 1-0 lead in their Europa League last-16 tie with Valencia, but the game was marred by torrential rain at San Mames, which left the pitch almost waterlogged, prompting Neville to hint his unhappiness that a halt in play was not considered.
“I’ve never seen a pitch in this condition,” the Coach said after the game.
“I encouraged the players to maintain the spirit they showed, despite the state of the pitch.
“[Next] Thursday, our fans deserve something special. I think we have to play with our heads and be both positive and optimistic.
“The players are very determined to win this tie. For me, the two teams had a great game.”
