Michel insists his future as Sevilla boss is not dependent on the result of tonight’s visit to Espanyol.
Los Nervionenses are in crisis mode after losing 4-0 to Atletico Madrid and 2-1 to Real Valladolid. They won 3-0 at the Cornella-El Prat just over a week ago in the Copa del Rey, but that was before Espanyol completed the appointment of Javier Aguirre.
“It doesn’t demoralise me,” the under fire tactician said in his media briefing. “I always get up thinking things will be okay, and receive daily support from those around me at the club.”
The 49-year-old is irked by some of the treatment he’s had at the hands of the Press however.
“They give praise or criticism, but ideas? Few. It’s part of the show, but I’m more than a suit, tie and hair gel, behind that there is work.
“For 15 days we were the best team in the city because of the win in the derby, and even the best for many years. Now they say we are closer to the relegation zone than the Champions League. I’m confident that everything will be okay at the end of the season.”
Michel also fielded questions on the quality of the group at his disposal, in light of sporting director Monchi admitting he may step aside.
“If you lose six players, and only have two superstars on your team, then you have to work. But we didn’t lose to Valladolid because of injuries. I’ve already seen at the general meeting what the situation is. I could ask for [Lionel] Messi, but we know the economic situation, not just for Sevilla but for everyone.”
