Deportivo de La Coruna boss Jose Luis Oltra has admitted he did not want to draw Real Mallorca in the last 32 of the Copa del Rey.
The Islanders, coached by former Depor boss Joaquin Caparros who was in charge at Riazor between 2005 and 2007, have had an impressive start to the 2012-13 campaign and Oltra says he would have preferred to have been paired with someone else.
“My preference was for another team because not only are Mallorca are a Primera side they have been one of the revelations of this season,” he told La Opinion de Coruna.
“They also have a Coach that Deportivo know well, one who is competitive, a winner, and somebody with a great tradition in this competition over the last few years.”
Nonetheless, Oltra confessed the cup was not high on his list of priorities, although that was not to say he was not taking the competition seriously despite his team having fallen into the bottom three two weeks ago.
“We are not in it to win it but neither will we lie down against anybody. It will act as a testing ground for some things and an escape valve in others. We can’t think of winning of the trophy but if we got the chance then we’d have to take it.
“We owe it to the club, who have won it twice, and we will give it importance but, like I say, it is not a priority right now,” explained Oltra, who recalled Depor’s Copa del Rey triumphs in 1995 and 2002.
