Mourinho’s double trophy aim

Jose Mourinho says Real Madrid are aiming to win both the Champions League and the La Liga title next season.

The Portuguese was speaking in front of 200 coaches at the University of California, Los Angeles as he took time out from Los Blancos’ tour to the United States.

“This year we are looking for the Champions League and to retain our La Liga title,” he said.

“We aspire to win the title and also to go one step further in the Champions League, where we have been knocked out in consecutive seasons at the semi-final stage.”

In a country where soccer is still a minority sport is was an opportunity for American coaches to get an insight into what makes the former Porto, Chelsea and Inter boss tick, and Mourinho was asked about the secret of his success.

“Quality, drive, passion, my methods…….there is no single reason,” he admitted.

“There are a lot of things you need to depend upon yet you also need to be good at connecting with people.

“I don’t control everything, even my own house because my wife does that, so how can I control my own club?

“When everybody is pulling in the same direction I am very happy and it makes it easier.”

Rap Polson, a director of the National Soccer Coaches of America Association, was delighted with the way in which the 49-year-old captivated his audience.

“We are proud that a Coach such as Mourinho came to talk to us. It was unforgettable,” he declared.
