Can La Liga’s surprise side keep it going in the second half of the season?

Elche have undoubtedly been the surprise package this year in La Liga, coming from a second-place finish in Segunda to be by far the best performers out of the three promoted sides. The question will be if Eder Sarabia’s side can keep it up in the second half of the season.

Anyone not paying close attention to Spanish football examining the Liga table or 오늘의중계 라이브정보 will perhaps raise an eyebrow at the presence of Los Franjiverdes in 11th place. Elche are just six points removed from a European spot, and have a five-point cushion to the relegation zone, despite being predicted to struggle. The comparison with their fellow promoted teams, Real Oviedo (19th, nine points behind) and Levante (20th, 10 points behind), is stark.

Sarabia’s side have delighted neutrals this season, playing an attractive, confident brand of football, with players comfortable on the ball and getting players forward without fear. Not only against sides that are around them, their system with three central defenders and aggressive midfielders has been implemented with discipline against the biggest sides in La Liga. Although they suffered a defeat to Barcelona away from home, Elche held Atletico Madrid to a draw at the Metropolitano (1-1) and if anything, were unlucky not to beat Real Madrid at home in their 2-2 draw.

The question will be whether they can maintain their form. A quick scan of the sides from the third relegation spot upwards reveals Girona, Osasuna, Valencia, Real Sociedad, RCD Mallorca, Rayo Vallecano and Alaves, all of who have been in the division for the best part of the last decade. None will give up the ghost easily. Elche rank exactly midtable offensively and defensively, but their (-1) goal difference is the best in the bottom half, suggesting Elche’s goals have rewarded them with points where possible.

Although their style of play shows little sign of being figured out, the pressure will be on to maintain their accuracy in front of goal. Elche have had 13 different scorers this season, with Rafa Mir topping the goal charts with six efforts, and Andre Silva second with four.

No other player has more than two goals this season, while Mir has scored in just two games in the last three months, and Silva has not scored in the last two months. The chances of staying up rise significantly with a player hitting double figures, and Mir has already equalled his best total since 2022. The same goes for Silva in terms of league action.

The pair may well hold the key to Elche surviving. If they can continue to make their aggressive model of play worthwhile by converting opportunities, they should be comfortable in their survival bid. If things continue to tail off, then Sarabia may find his side struggling more often.

  1. Good discussion of Elche. I had not been watching them closely. My biggest surprise is Espanyol. They seem to be for real. Would appreciate a similar discussion of them in another article such as this. Thanks.
