Villarreal manager Marcelino Garcia Toral is demanding new signings this summer, as he aims to get the Yellow Submarine in the fight for European qualification during the 2024-25 season. The main area he hopes to address is in defence, and possible targets are already being drawn up.
According to Revista Colorada (via Marca), Villarreal have presented a contract proposal to Vitao, who is leaving Shakhtar Donetsk when his contract expires at the end of this month. The 24-year-old would earn €9m if it was accepted, and this is more lucrative than the package offered to him by West Ham United (€8m).
Villarreal are also competing with Real Betis, who have been monitoring Vitao since the winter. They are prepared to go to €10m with their contract offer, which would put them ahead in the race for the Brazilian centre-back’s signature.
It remains to be seen whether Villarreal can get their man, although it’s worth noting that there could be complications with Internacional, Vitao’s current loan club.
