Carlos Carvalhal says he knows why Celta Vigo continue struggle despite succession of managers

Celta Vigo are once again enduring a tough start to the season, with Rafael Benitez’s side stuck in the relegation zone after 10 games. It is not the first time either, with Carlos Carvalhal replacing Chacho Coudet last season to great effect, only to fall off in the final months of the season.

With just one victory so far, Benitez is coming under pressure for his position, despite the fact that Celta have tried to back Benitez both in the market, and as their key signing himself.

His predeccessor, Carvalhal, was asked why Celta continue to struggle, despite seemingly having a squad good enough for the top half of the table – something that has been a consistent issue over recent years.

“Partly yes, but I don’t think it would be ethical to make it public on my part. I discussed part of it with the Board last year, the other I didn’t have the opportunity because I left the club,” he told Marca.

“There have to be explanations, obviously, because the reality is that there are a lot of changes in players and coaches and the club cannot get out of an uncomfortable position. I prefer to talk about it with those responsible to try to improve the club.”

Celta’s disappointing form remains a mystery to their fans, who have become enormously frustrated with the continuing problems at Balaidos. Carvalhal said that injuries hurt their end to the season last year when he was in charge, but also mentioned that he was friends with Benitez. Perhaps the former Liverpool manager might consider picking up the phone to him.
