Villarreal upset the odds with 1-0 Bayern Munich win

Villarreal have torn up the form book with a 1-0 Champions League quarter final first leg win over Bayern Munich.

The Yellow Submarine were rated as firm outsiders ahead of kick off on the Spanish East Coast with Unai Emery’s side more than happy to play the underdog card.

The home side looked bright from the first kick as Arnaut Danjuma popped up inside the box to divert home Dani Parejo’s shot from close range.

With Bayern unable to muster a response, Villarreal were desperately unlucky not to extend their lead either side of the break.

Francis Coquelin saw his effort ruled out by VAR before the interval with Gerard Moreno rattling the post just after the restart.

Villarreal’s inability to find a second goal is likely to be a real post-game source of frustration for Emery as they still face a challenge to secure a last four spot in the second leg in Bavaria next week.
