Iago Aspas backs Luis Enrique for new Spain contract despite Euro 2020 regret

Iago Aspas has backed Luis Enrique for a new contract despite being overlooked in recent times.

The Celta Vigo striker was among the top scorers in Spain last season but he was still left out of the Spain squad for Euro 2020.

Aspas has been called up to previous Spain squads under Luis Enrique, but recent times have seen the experienced frontman fall out of favour.

This season, Aspas has started a little slowly, and so his lack of call-ups across the last two international periods have been understandable.

But he does have a little regret over missing out on the Euros despite scoring 14 times in La Liga last term.

“Of course I have questioned it at times,” he told Diario AS. “It’s a decision for the coach. I wouldn’t have been taken in this last break, but in the last Euros, yes.”

Despite the regrets over Euro 2020, Aspas thinks Luis Enrique deserves a new contract as Spain boss after leading La Roja to the Euro 2020 semi-finals and then to the 2022 World Cup.

“Seeing what he is doing until now, yes,” Aspas said. “He has done well in the Euros. I would renew him.”

Aspas will be hoping he can still push for a place in the Spain squad ahead of next year’s World Cup, though it does feel as though Luis Enrique is determined to look elsewhere.
