No TV companies bidding for new-look Spanish Supercopa

The Spanish FA are facing embarrassment on their revamped Supercopa with multiple TV companies not bidding to win the broadcast rights.

The three major broadcasting companies for Spanish football – RTVE, Mediaset and Atresmedia – have all confirmed they will not bid to show the competition, which controversially will be staged in Saudi Arabia.

It follows on from a report in Diario Sportwhich has claimed that one of the four participants, Valencia, may pull out due to unhappiness with the economic rewards for participating, and may be replaced by Real Betis.

It is claimed by the report that Los Che supremos Peter Lim and Anil Murthy are angry at the economic distribution of the tournament and are considering withdrawing their club.

It was announced on Monday that the four-team tournament would be played in Saudi Arabia this January with Valencia pitted against Real Madrid.

The club qualified for the tournament courtesy of winning the Copa del Rey last year – ironically in the stadium of Real Betis – who would replace them due to being defeated in the Copa semi-finals.

Last season’s one-off match between Barcelona and Sevilla was played in the Moroccan city of Tangier, but the game is usually played over two legs in Spain.

The two-legged system has now been scrapped with the games to be played over one-off semi-final and final matches, with the competition running across five days in early January.

The semi-finals will be Wednesday, January 8 and Thursday, January 9, 2020. The final, between the winning clubs of both the semi-finals, on Sunday, January 12, 2020.

The draw for the semi-finals will be made on Monday November 11 at 4pm Spanish time, while the winners will pocket €2m, the runners-up €1.4m with each defeated semi-finalist netting €800k.
