Espanyol consider sacking boss David Gallego

Espanyol officials are discussing the future of under-fire Coach David Gallego following Sunday’s defeat at Real Mallorca.

The 2-0 loss left the Catalan club second from bottom in La Liga with just one victory and five points from their opening eight rounds of action.

The result was particularly damaging as it means Mallorca have now leapfrogged Gallego’s side in the standings and only Leganes – who are yet to win this campaign – are below Espanyol.

Club owner Chen Yansheng has scheduled to meet senior club officials in China as he considers the next move for the club with Gallego’s future now said to be on the line, as outlined by Marca.

Gallego replaced Rubi – now at the helm of Real Betis – this summer but has struggled in his early tenure, with defender Mario Hermoso and striker Borja Iglesias among the star departures from the RCDE Stadium.

Espanyol are also competing in the Europa League this season and recorded an impressive 2-0 victory at CSKA Moscow on Thursday night following an underwhelming opening 1-1 draw at home to Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros.

Former Girona and Sevilla boss Pablo Machin is said to be the early favourite to replace Gallego.
