Zidane: Real Madrid 7-3 derby defeat irrelevant

Real Madrid’s 7-3 pre-season defeat against Atletico Madrid has been described by Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane as ‘irrelevant’.

The friendly match was played in the United States in July with Los Blancos falling to the heavy defeat – in a game in which they had at one point trailed 6-0 – and prompting early concerns on the season ahead.

However, Madrid currently sit at the top of La Liga after six rounds of matches, one point ahead of Los Rojiblancos ahead of Saturday night’s meeting at the Wanda Metropolitano.

“That game is not relevant to this one, we have not seen anything (of the negatives) since,” Zidane told reporters on Friday, as cited by Marca.

“We feel we are in good form and they will feel the same too, so I believe it will be a good game but I am not interested in that – we only care about the three points.

“This game is like any other in that we want to win and we will do everything we can to get the three points, but we know it will not be easy against a very strong opponent.

“Players returning? You will find out tomorrow but all the players are recovering and it is positive news for us, they are returning to training.”
