Mario Hermoso: “Spain have to create new successes”

The Atlético Madrid defender spoke about the current Spanish national set up and life at Atlético to AS.

Mario Hermoso, the defender signed by Atlético Madrid from Espanyol this summer, is enjoying life with both club and country duties respectively

He sat down for an interview with AS to discuss various topics, including the Spanish national team, explaining:

"This country has a rich history of success in recent times with winning the World Cup and two European Championships, which was wonderful but now that era has passed. We have to create our memories and succeses, which at the moment is to secure qualification for EURO 2020.

"When the tournament comes around we will be prepared and expect the best."

Questioned about how daunting the prospect is of playing alongside Captain Sergio Ramos, who is on the verge of beating Iker Casillas' all time record appearances for Spain and at Atlético, replacing a club legend like Diego Godin, Hermoso has nothing but praise for their success:

"The numbers of Ramos speak for themselves and in terms of Godín, what more can I say. He is a reference, a club legend and one of the best defenders for club and country. Both have shown great commitment and determination more than you can imagine."

The defender also commented on how is settling into life in his news surroundings in the capital:

"My mentality is to grow every day and improve in every training session. I have joined a very important team in Atlético and it is an important step in my career.

"I have already had my taste of playing at home in the Wanda Metropolitano and it is unique. The fans push you and in turn it helps the team and helps the club to grow. I feel privileged to be part of this club.

"I am in a happy moment but although Atlético is leading the league, the campaign has only just started and Spain still have to qualify for the European Championships."
