Real Zaragoza have completed the signing of Borussia Dortmund playmaker and Japan international Shinji Kagawa, it has been confirmed.
The 30-year-old had fallen from prominence in Dortmund’s first-team squad and had participated in just two Bundesliga games so far last campaign, before a January loan switch to Turkish club Besiktas.
Kagawa impressed in Istanbul as he netted four goal and provided two assists in 14 appearances, and had been rumoured to be joining the club permanently before strong links appeared saying he would join Celta Vigo.
However, this move has come as an unreported surprise with the former Manchester United player now joining the Spanish second tier side.
In November, Kagawa told Nikkan Sports, as cited by Diario AS: “I am keen to solve the situation I am in now.
“It is probably important for me to change clubs, to put myself into a different place and to set myself a new challenge.
“I am not afraid of going to a new country and I have already done Germany and England, now I am thinking about Spain.
“Spain would be the most important challenge in my career, I cannot retire without going there.”
Kagawa initially joined the German club from Cerezo Osaka in 2010 before spending two seasons at Manchester United.
