Filipe Luis joins Flamengo after Atletico Madrid exit

Former Atletico Madrid defender Filipe Luis has returned to Brazil and has joined Flamengo as a free agent, it has been confirmed.

The veteran full-back saw his contract at Los Rojiblancos expire this summer and despite suggestions that there were no negotiations for a new deal, he has now left La Liga.

Atleti have already signed his fellow Brazilian Renan Lodi as a direct replacement for their defence, as part of a wide-ranging overhaul of their back-line over the summer months.

The 33-year-old had been extensively linked with a summer move to Barcelona, where it was reported he could provide back-up to first-choice Jordi Alba in the position.

The left-back started his career at Brazilian side Figueirense before moving to European football with a switch to Ajax in 2004 and has also enjoyed stints at Deportivo La Coruna and Chelsea.

Previous reports from his native country confirms an approach from the Catalan giants while Borussia Dortmund were also said to have held an interest in a potential move and Turkish giants Fenerbahce have also been mentioned with a deal.
