Luis Enrique replaced by Robert Moreno as Spain boss

Robert Moreno has replaced Luis Enrique as Spain boss after the latter stepped down due to personal reasons, it has been confirmed.

Former Barcelona boss Enrique had not been present in the dugout for his side’s recent victories over Malta, the Faroe Islands and Sweden.

The national team boss had been unable to fulfil his duties to an ongoing personal family issue, which has not yet been disclosed due to privacy.

Moreno, Enrique’s long-term assistant who stepped in to take the helm of the last three matches, has now stepped into the breach on a permanent basis.

Moreno – previous number two at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona – is said to be very well-liked within La Roja’s squad and steered the side to victories in all three matches.

Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales confirmed the news at a press conference this afternoon, which had been called at short notice.

Enrique had previously coached at Celta Vigo, Roma and the Blaugrana and it is not yet clear when he will return to the game.
