Luka Modric has explained how Real Madrid ‘have the challenge of returning to be the best again’ after a fallow season.
Los Blancos ended the season empty-handed having won the Champions League title in four of the previous five seasons, while they ended the league campaign a whopping 19 points behind Barcelona.
“This award means a lot to me, so I can only thank everyone who voted for me,” Modric explained, as cited by Diario Sport.
“It is always good to get this award in which my colleagues vote. So I want to say thanks to my teammates, without them this prize would not be possible.
“At Real Madrid we have the challenge of returning to the old ways, of being the best, and the same can be said of the national team.”
Italian side Inter went through a protracted transfer saga last year in their attempt to sign Modric, but they could now return to the negotiation table.
There is set to be somewhat of a squad overhaul at Madrid this summer after a hugely disappointing campaign.
