Julen Lopetegui favourite for Sevilla appointment

Former Real Madrid and Spain boss Julen Lopetegui is the favourite to fill the vacant managerial role at Sevilla, according to reports.

The former La Roja Coach was dismissed by Madrid at the end of October following a 5-1 El Clasico loss against Barcelona – leaving Madrid languishing in ninth place in La Liga after ten matches.

Earlier this month, ABC de Sevilla reported he was on the managerial shortlist for the Andalusian club and now Estadio Deportivo, via Radio Marca, verify such claims.

“I left (Real Madrid) in October, I had offers from teams and I told everyone that I was not prepared at that moment,” Lopetegui told the Universo Valdano show on Movistar Plus.

“I lacked energy, I needed to recharge many things, now I would like to be in the place where I feel I can develop a project – giving ideas and winning things.

“It needs to be where the conditions for doing it exist, so let's see what happens in the next few days.”

Lopetegui’s appointment at the outgoing European champions came in acrimonious circumstances, coming on the eve of the World Cup, where he was set to manage the Spanish national team, last summer.

The Spanish FA took the decision to dismiss Lopetegui two days before their opener against Portugal, after his appointment by Madrid was announced without their knowledge.

Earlier this month, Lopetegui was linked by El Mundo Deportivo with taking over the Bayern Munich job this summer from Niko Kovac.

Former Roma boss Eusebio Di Franscesco has also been linked to Sevilla, with Joaquin Caparros confirmed as not continuing in the role next season.
