Spain may appoint Abelardo to replace Luis Enrique

The Spanish FA will look to appoint Alaves boss Abelardo Fernandez should Luis Enrique not be able to continue in his role, say Radio Marca.

National team boss Enrique missed Spain’s recent European Championships 2020 qualifiers due to ‘important family matters’, with his assistant coach Robert Moreno stepping in on a temporary basis to lead the side.

Abelardo took over at Alaves in December 2017 and has worked wonders at the Vitoria-based club since, initially leading them to safety before a top-half finish this season.

There are multiple reports that the former Barcelona defender will not continue his role at the Basque club beyond this summer and will be in search of new employment.

It is claimed that because the former central defender is a former teammate and close friend of Enrique, there would not be a significant period of transition required between the two.

There have not yet been any contacts with Abelardo or any other potential replacement as the FA’s preference is to retain Enrique in his role.
