Benfica move for Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno

Benfica are in negotiations to sign Liverpool full-back Alberto Moreno on a free transfer this summer, say reports.

Marca cite a report in A Bola that the Lisbon-based club have made a move for the Spaniard and are likely to trump Moreno’s former club Sevilla to a deal.

Benfica are currently on course for the league title and are seeking a replacement for Alex Grimaldo, who appears set for a summer departure.

The 26-year-old left the Andalusian club to move to Merseyside in the summer of 2014 in a €14m (£12m) deal, but his contract at Anfield expires this summer.

The report states the player is keen on a return to Spain with the five-time Europa League winners top of the list as contract talks in England have stalled.

Moreno has made just two Premier League appearances to date this campaign despite steering clear of injury, with Andrew Robertson firmly established as the club’s number one left-back.

Sergio Escudero has become the regular left-back at Sevilla, for whom Moreno helped to the 2014 Europa League title.
