Ajax captain Matthijs de Ligt should sign for Barcelona this summer, according to the club’s former Coach Louis Van Gaal.
The 19-year-old has been the captain of the Amsterdam-based club for over a year and has starred for club and country.
Widely regarded as one of the best upcoming talents in world football, the central defender is set to command a €75m fee from Ajax.
“If I was in his position, I would go to Barcelona,” Van Gaal has said, as cited by Marca.
“I think they have defenders who are not very strong, and he would improve them. But in Italy they are masters of defending, and Manchester City would be a good fit.”
Ajax boss ten Hag told Suddeutschen Zeitung this week, as cited by ESPN FC: “There's zero chance Matthijs de Ligt is staying at Ajax.
“There are so many clubs interested in him. He will leave us this summer, but I don't know whether he'll join Bayern or Barcelona.”
Juventus are the other club who have been strongly linked to a summer move for the Dutch international.
