Steve McManaman backs Real Madrid president Florentino Perez

Former Real Madrid winger Steve McManaman has voiced his support for club president Florentino Perez after the return of Coach Zinedine Zidane.

McManaman spent four seasons at Madrid between 1999 and 2003, making 152 appearances and netting 14 goals, while winning two La Liga titles and two Champions League crowns.

“I like Florentino a lot, this is the man who helped the club win four Champions League titles in five seasons,” McManaman explained on La Galerna, as cited by Marca.

“He is the man responsible for bringing Zidane back too, and his only mistake was allowing Cristiano Ronaldo to leave without securing a replacement.

“The double departure of Zidane and Ronaldo was huge because they were the two key figures for the club, they allowed them to enjoy control in the most important games.

“Maybe Zidane thought Ronaldo had already decided to leave and that he would not be replaced, maybe he sensed there would be problems for the club.”
