Gerard Pique called up to Catalonia squad

Gerard Pique has been called up to the Catalonia national side for their friendly match with Venezuela on March 25th.

The Barcleona defender, who retired from international duty with Spain following the 2018 World Cup, has accepted the invitation to make his 10th appearance for the team, at Girona's Estadio Montilivi.

Catalonia are not a ratified member of UEFA or FIFA, however they are permitted to play friendly games against members of either organisation, or other non-affiliated sides.

Pique is joined by former Barcelona team mate Xavi Hernandez, currently playing for Qatari side Al Sadd, as well as other former Nou Camp stars including Marc Barta, Marc Muniesa, Martin Montoya, Aleix Vidal and Bojan Krkic.

There has been controversy over the squad selection, with Real Valladolid, Rayo Vallecano and Huesca all refusing permission for their players to join up due to their respective relegation battles in La Liga.

Watford have also declined to release midfielder Gerard Deulofeu, due to a pre-arranged training camp at the Premier League side.

Catalonia manager Gerard Lopez has accepted the clubs requests, stating that he 'understands' their position.
