Iker Casillas ‘would love La Liga return’

Veteran goalkeeper Iker Casillas has revealed he would ‘love to return to La Liga’ one day despite signing a contract extension at FC Porto.

Now aged 37, the former Real Madrid stopper has re-established himself as number one at the Portuguese giants this season, starting 34 games to date.

His new deal will take the Spaniard’s into a fifth season in northern Portugal and has been first-choice for all that time barring a period last season, when Jose Sa – now on loan at Olympiakos – was preferred.

“I would love to return to La Liga, although my Real Madrid and Spain careers are in the past,” Casillas told reporters after being made an ambassador for the league.

“I was lucky to compete in that division over many years, and it is a shame that I am no longer playing there, I miss the league.

“I love that Zinedine Zidane has returned to Real Madrid, it gives everyone at the club a lot of renewed energy and hope.”
