Barcelona president confirms interest in Matthijs de Ligt

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has confirmed the club are considering a move for in-demand Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt.

The 19-year-old has been the captain of the Amsterdam-based club for over a year and has starred for club and country.

“This is a player who would be under consideration,” Bartomeu told Ser Catalunya, as cited by Marca.

“We are always looking at the best players and those talents will always interest Barcelona, so he will be a name in our plans for sports planning.

“We moved quickly for Frenkie de Jong (de Ligt’s teammate) because other clubs had approached him.”

Widely regarded as one of the best upcoming talents in world football, the central defender is set to command a €75m fee from Ajax.

There is said to be optimism at the Camp Nou that the €86m deal to take his Ajax teammate Frenkie de Jong to the Camp Nou this summer may influence his close friend.

The situation appears a little unclear for Barca who have already signed Jean-Clair Todibo from Toulouse while Jeison Murillo has joined on loan from Valencia.

Atletico Madrid have also been linked with a move to the Dutchman.
