Toni Kroos: “Julen Lopetegui very unlucky at Real Madrid”

Real Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos believes the team’s former Coach Julen Lopetegui ‘was very unlucky’ during his tenure with the club.

The former Spain boss took the reins at Madrid over the summer in controversial circumstances on the eve of the World Cup, but was sacked in October with the club lying ninth in La Liga.

“It was very difficult at the beginning of the season,” Kroos explained in an interview with La Liga media, in quotes cited by Marca.

“We have been very successful in recent years but at the start this time it was hard because there was change, and many players returned from the World Cup at different times.

“Julen Lopetegui was very unlucky here, he did a great job but did not get the results that we all wanted and it was not a good time for the club.

“We have improved in the months since and we want to be back fighting for titles, we believe we can in the run-in.

“Santiago Solari is a Coach who knows what it takes to play at this level, that helps us a bit more and players appreciate that.”
