Samuel Eto’o: ‘Black Coaches viewed as second class’

Experienced striker Samuel Eto’o has alleged black Coaches are cautious of entering management because ‘they are viewed as second-class citizens’.

Eto’o spent 13 years in Spanish football across Real Madrid, Real Mallorca and Barcelona, along with loan spells at Leganes and Espanyol, between 1996 and 2009.

“Some former black players don’t want to become Coaches, even if maybe they’d like to,” Eto’o told Canal+, as cited by Marca.

“Of course, there are many African Coaches who have qualifications, but there’s simply no confidence in them, unlike other Coaches.

“Coaches of colour have been disheartened because they’re viewed as second-class citizens. Still, I won in Europe as a player so I have to win in Europe as a Coach.”

The 37-year-old is now playing for Qatar SC having also represented Inter, Chelsea, Everton and Sampdoria, among other clubs.
