Diego Godin plays through pain barrier to score late Atletico Madrid winner

Diego Godin admits he is facing a month out after scoring Atletico Madrid’s winner in a 3-2 victory over Athletic Bilbao through the pain barrier.

Godin clashed with Inaki Williams in the build-up to Athletic’s second goal but stayed on as Atleti ran out of substitutions, ultimately coming up with the decisive finish.

Los Rojiblancos reported after the game on Saturday that the defender ‘suffered an injury to his left thigh’ and he seemed to agree with their assessment.

“I broke down in the build-up to Williams’ goal,” confessed the 32-year-old.

“I couldn’t continue. I was going to go off and gave my armband to Griezmann, but we had no substitutions left so I stayed on. Cholo told me to stay up front.

“It’s true that there were many minutes left on the clock and I thought about leaving the game early, but I also thought that I could still help the team.

“I know I may have a tear, so I could be out for 20 days or a month. I know my body. I made as little effort as possible so I wouldn’t aggravate [my injury].

“Staying on had its reward. It crosses your mind that you can aggravate the injury a bit by staying on, but I tried to do my best.”
