Former Real Madrid forward Predrag Mijatovic has called on the European champions to persist with Coach Julen Lopetegi: “Sacking would be a huge error.”
The Serbian, who scored the goal to clinch Madrid’s seventh European Cup in 1998, believes it would ‘be an error’ to dismiss the former Spain Coach despite the below-par recent rules.
“For me, sacking Lopetegui right now would be an error,” Mijatovic told Cadena Ser.
“Without any doubt this would be a mistake, the league is the most important thing and it remains very close, you have to keep faith in your Coach.
“We cannot keep looking for a scapegoat, instead we need to find solutions because we have the players to take us out of this situation and move us forward.
“We are facing a bad issue, Julen had to face a very complicated press conference but he handled it extremely well and I believe he has confidence in himself and his staff.
“Maybe they are not playing well because they have had so much success in recent years and they no longer have Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored a lot of goals at the club.
“When you have a player like that leave the club, you need to replace him directly and I’m not convinced that Benzema nor Bale can fill that gap.
“There are opportunities to recover this situation, firstly against Viktoria Plzen and then with our trip to the Camp Nou against Barcelona.”
