Lyon midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop has chosen to represent at Spain at international level ahead of his birthplace Senegal.
The 21-year-old lived in Spain for six years after moving as a 14-year-old and representing Celta Vigo, before joining Olympique Lyonnais last season in a €10m deal.
Diop has represented Spain up to Under-21 level and helped the Under-19 side to success in 2015, while attempts from Senegal to earn his allegiance have been unsuccessful.
“I have been called by Senegal several times, but I remain committed to Spain,” Diop told Marca.
“Of course, I can never forget my origin, I am Senegalese, but I also feel Spanish.
“Spain has given me everything and I want to give back in return. I am very happy with the decision I've made.”
