Spain Coach Luis Enrique admits he ‘misjudged’ the quality of forward Iago Aspas and leaving him out of his initial squad was a ‘mistake’.
The Celta Vigo striker was omitted from Lucho’s original La Roja squad and was only recalled when Diego Costa withdrew due to personal reasons, while Aspas then started in Saturday’s win in England.
“Training sessions often make you change your expectations,” Enrique told reporters, in quotes cited by Diario AS.
“It is important from a coaching point of view to recognise when you have made a misjudgement or a mistake on someone and that was the case on Iago Aspas.
“Since seeing him in training, I must admit I previously underappreciated him and being able to change your mind like this is so important for a Coach.
“It shows other players too that if they are given the opportunity, they have the chances to work into my plans.”
