Lopetegui hails Madrid ‘mentality’

Julen Lopetegui hailed Real Madrid’s ‘mentality’ after they came back from behind to beat Girona 4-1 on Sunday.

“What stood out most was the mentality of the team,” the Coach said after the game.

“The game started in a difficult manner for us. They attacked well on the break through Portu.

“They scored first and almost scored a second, but we bounced back with character and mental strength, which is what La Liga demands. Each game is played in its own world.

“We’ve tried to explain the situation with Keylor and Courtois. It’s clear that it’s not easy to understand, but it’s easy to explain.

“I have two great goalkeepers, three if you count Kiko Casilla, and they pose solutions, as well as problems.

“We’ll decide day by day. Tonight I went for Keylor and the truth is that he did very well.

“We’ll see what happens in the future, but we have great competition in each position, and that makes the team stronger.

“I have ideas in my head for the future, but I won’t disclose anything yet. I’m only thinking about immediate challenges, like these three points we’ve picked up.

“We did some good things in the first half, although we gave away too many counterattacks.

“In the second half, with the score at 1-2, we calmed down and in taking off Marcelo, we wanted to tighten up the left side. They had made changes of their own and are very good in the air.

“It’s also true that Modric and Varane arrived later than their teammates and were more than 20 days behind in terms of preparation.

“However, it’s been a very good week of training for them. They’ll be integrated into the XI gradually, but there are alternatives and competition, which is a good thing.

“Girona are a very well-drilled team, with players who have been together for a long time. A Coach like Eusebio has also arrived, and he’s someone who knows how to treat the ball.

“The proof is that in the first half, they almost scored a second goal.”
