Atletico Madrid captain Diego Godin has admitted to turning down offers from other clubs but has denied renewing his contract.
The Uruguayan defender has been appointed captain following the exit of Gabi Fernandez and had been linked to Manchester United and Juventus, before reports in Spain said a new deal had been signed.
“To wear the captain’s armband for this club brings a lot of responsibility but also happiness and joy,” Godin told reporters ahead of Wednesday’s Super Cup against Real Madrid.
“I have been working hard at this club for so long with so many players and coaches, it really is an honour.
“My contract? No I have not renewed it, I have rejected offers from others to remain at this club but due to personal reasons, I have not renewed.
“The aim for this season? The Champions League is always the dream. But we are trying to improve and prepare the best we can, we have lots of optimism.”
