Zico: Vinicius must improve

Former Brazil and Flamenco legend Zico believes his countryman Vinicius needs to improve his shooting if he is to fulfil his potential.

The 18-year-old has just joined Real Madrid from Zico’s old club for an estimated €45m, and impressed on his debut in the International Champions Cup against Manchester United in Miami.

However, Zico has urged caution and explained that the youngster must work on his game if he is to flourish.

“In any activity, the secret is hard work and how you do it. Nobody is born knowing, we are born with a gift and that is something that must be improved.

“Certain situations can be perfected, mainly certain basic aspects of playing football, and Vinicius needs to improve his shooting ability a lot.

“Using the front of his foot is not his strong point because you can’t simply shoot using only one type of shot all the time.”

Even so, Zico feels if Vinicius develops as he should then he could become one of the best players in the world.

“He’s very talented and a player who, I have no doubt, can progress even more. I just hope he doesn’t lose his Brazilian roots.

“What makes him different is what made Neymar different, which is the one-on-ones and the ability to get out of difficult situations.

“Everyone is happy to see his talent has already started to emerge and, right now, it appears the money invested in him was correct.

“Nonetheless, he needs to be patient and wait for the game time he gets to take advantage when he has the chance to impress,” maintained Zico.
