Barcelona midfielder Sergi Roberto is hopeful of forcing his way back into the Spanish national team setup under new Coach Luis Enrique.
The 26-year-old was used regularly by Enrique at the Camp Nou, making 112 appearances across three seasons under the new boss of the national team.
The utility player – who has often been deployed at right-back by Barca – expressed disappointment of missing out on the World Cup squad this summer.
“Honestly, I thought I was going to get called up,” Roberto said, in quotes carried by ESPN FC.
“I wasn't, so that gave me a good chance to have a longer holiday — I was able to watch (the World Cup) on television.
“I have always said that Luis Enrique has been very important in my career, both with Barca B and the first team.
“It's true he's now the Spain coach but I am just focused on giving my best and, if in the end I get the call from Luis, I'll be really happy, but that depends on how I play for Barca.”
A La Masia youth graduate, Roberto made his debut for the Blaugrana in November 2010 before becoming a mainstay in the first team squad from 2013.
Roberto has won 20 trophies with the club including two Champions League crowns and five La Liga titles.
