Madrid announce Lopetegui appointment

Real Madrid have announced Spain Coach Julen Lopetegui will replace Zinedine Zidane following the World Cup.

Zidane resigned days after leading Los Blancos to victory over Liverpool in the Champions League Final, having won the competition three seasons in a row since replacing Rafael Benitez in January 2016.

“Julen Lopetegui will be the Coach of Real Madrid after the 2018 World Cup in Russia,” a short statement on the Madrid website confirmed, with the trainer signing a three-year deal.

Lopetegui has been Spain boss since 2016, replacing Vicente Del Bosque, and recently signed a contract extension with the national team.

Under Lopetegui Spain qualified for World Cup 2018 by topping Group G from Italy, and will face Portugal, Morocco and Iran in Group B in Russia.

Lopetegui, who was on the books of Madrid as a goalkeeper in his playing days, has also been in charge at Rayo Vallecano, a number of Spain’s youth sides and Portuguese giants Porto.
