Nelson Vivas joins Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid have appointed Nelson Vivas to Diego Simeone’s coaching staff, a year after he scooped the Argentina Manager of the Year crown.

The former Arsenal full-back scooped the award for his stint in charge of Estudiantes while he has also managed Quilmes and most recently, Defensa y Jusitica.

The 48-year-old’s managerial career has been marked by controversy – he left his role at Quilmes after attacking a fan in the stands while in 2017, he famously ripped his shirt off (pictured) after a penalty decision went against his Estudiantes side.

Vivas replaces former Portuguese midfielder Tiago on Simeone’s coaching staff, while the former Argentina international played half a season on loan at Celta Vigo in 2000.
