Espanyol end Atleti home run

Espanyol inflicted Atletico Madrid’s first home league defeat of the season as the Catalan club completed a league ‘double’ over Diego Simeone’s men.

A Stefan Savic own goal and Leo Bapistao strike in the second half condemned Atleti to their first La Liga loss at the Wanda Metropolitano and ended a run of 12 consecutive home clean sheets.

The hosts were without a number of star players including Diego Godin, Antoine Griezmann and Diego Costa, with the upcoming Europa League final in mind, and the Catalans took full advantage.

Oscar Melendo's strike took a major deflection off the head of Savic eight minutes after the break before former Atleti forward Bapistao wrapped up the win with a long-range strike.

Real Madrid now have the opportunity to leapfrog their city rivals into second place with a win at Sevilla on Wednesday night.
