Berizzo sets Athletic Club demands

Athletic Bilbao are continuing negotiations with out-of-work Coach Eduardo Berizzo but the two are currently at odds with the valuation of his contract.

A report in Marca states the Argentine tactician is demanding an annual salary of €2.5m, while the club’s initial offer stood at just €1.5m.

Berizzo is reportedly remaining in the Basque city to continue with negotiations having flown in from Chile the previous week.

The former central defender was dismissed from his role at Sevilla back in December, despite guiding them to the knockout stages of the Champions League and 28 points from 17 La Liga matches.

Berizzo, who was recovering from prostrate cancer at the time of his sacking, is said to be replacing Jose Angel Ziganda at the San Mames according to reports across the Spanish press.

The Basque giants are said to view the former Celta Vigo Coach as the ideal candidate to rekindle the approach of former tactician Marcelo Bielsa, who previously managed Athletic.

The club languish in 12th in La Liga standings and crashed out of the Europa League at the last 16 stage, with Ziganda’s position coming under increasing scrutiny.

The former Bilbao Athletic Coach replaced Barcelona-bound Ernesto Valverde in the hotseat last summer, when Berizzo was reportedly a candidate before opting for Sevilla.
