Report: Berizzo set for Athletic

Eduardo Berizzo will be appointed as the new Athletic Club Bilbao Coach at the end of the season, say reports in the Spanish press.

The Argentine was dismissed from his role at Sevilla back in December, despite guiding them to the knockout stages of the Champions League and 28 points from 17 La Liga matches.

Berizzo, who was recovering from prostrate cancer at the time of his sacking, is said to be replacing Jose Angel Ziganda at the San Mames, Estadio Deportivo cite Marca as reporting.

The Basque giants are said to view the former Celta Vigo Coach as the ideal candidate to rekindle the approach of former tactician Marcelo Bielsa, who previously managed Athletic.

The club languish in 12th in La Liga standings and crashed out of the Europa League at the last 16 stage, with Ziganda’s position coming under increasing scrutiny.

The former Bilbao Athletic Coach replaced Barcelona-bound Ernesto Valverde in the hotseat last summer, when Berizzo was reportedly a candidate before opting for Sevilla.
