Atletico Madrid captain Gabi warned ‘it is too early to pay tributes’ to Fernando Torres, who will leave the club at the end of the campaign.
The 34-year-old will be leaving Los Rojiblancos at the end of the campaign but the club are still fighting for leading positions in La Liga and the Europa League title.
“We all know the significance of Fernando at this club, he is an icon,” Gabi told a pre-match press conference, as cited by Marca.
“However, it is too early to start paying tributes to him as we still have more titles to fight for together and we want to give him the send-off he is deserving of.
“The Europa League title would be important for us and for Fernando, it would be the icing on the cake really.
“Sporting are a very difficult team and this tie is not yet done – as we have seen in the Champions League this week, you can never rest on your laurels.”
