Schalke confirm Meyer departure

Reported Barcelona and Atletico Madrid target Max Meyer will leave Schalke in summer when his contract expires, the club have confirmed.

The 22-year-old has been linked to a host of clubs and the Gelsenkirchen-based club, who are also losing Leon Goretzka to Bayern Munich on a free this summer, have confirmed his expected exit.

“At the moment we can and must expect that Max leaves the club in the summer,” director Christian Heidel said on Thursday, as cited by ESPN FC.

"Everything suggests that (he will leave) and there is no offer from us and no wish from Max to have a conversation again.”

Diego Simeone is also said to be concerned about the age profile in his squad and Meyer ‘would assist in rejuvenating’ his ranks.

Meyer is adaptable but is primarily an attacking midfielder, with Barcelona among the other clubs linked to his signature.
