Athletic Bilbao have shifted their focus onto former Sevilla Coach Eduardo Berizzo, according to reports in the Spanish press.
The news follows reports that Thomas Tuchel – the Basque club’s number one, but ambitious, target – was close to agreeing a deal with Paris Saint-Germain, where he would replace Unai Emery.
Berizzo is out of work after his dismissal from Sevilla in December, although the former Celta Vigo Coach has recovered from cancer – which had been diagnosed the previous month.
A report by Basque-based journalist Nika Cuenca outlines the Argentine is the favourite for the post at San Mames, with Bundesliga-based bosses Julian Nagelsmann (Hoffenheim) and Ralph Hasenhütll (RB Leipizig) also in the frame.
Current Athletic boss Jose Angel Ziganda is expected to be dismissed at the end of the season, with the club languishing in the bottom half of the standings.
