Diego Simeone praised debutant goalkeeper Axel Werner following his clean sheet against Lokomotiv Moscow on Thursday.
The 22-year-old initially joined Los Rojiblancos in 2016 but has also enjoyed a loan stint at Boca Juniors and successfully deputised for Atleti in the comfortable 3-0 Europa League victory.
“He is a young goalkeeper who has shown confidence and maturity,” Simeone told his post-match press conference.
“He looked secure even though we did not face many shots against Lokomotiv in this match, but he transmits the same feelings and confidence as Jan Oblak.
“We trust him and have full confidence in him, we chose him to play in this match some time ago and we know he will do a great job when the opportunity arises for him.
“He has a part to play in our future.”
