Semedo ‘victim of financial fraud’

The agent of Villarreal defender Ruben Semedo claims his client is a victim of financial fraud after a series of arrests.

The 23-year-old was arrested this week for allegedly ‘tying up, hitting and holding an individual inside his house’ in the district of Valencia.

The complainant alleges that he was locked in a room after being immobilised, while the accused stole his keys, broke into his apartment and carried out large scale theft, with gunshots also said to be involved to intimidate the individual.

The Portugal international’s run-in with the law made headlines in Spain earlier this year after allegedly carrying a firearm at a nightclub in Valencia in November and smashing a man over the head with a glass bottle in separate incidents.

However, now his agent Catio Balde claims his client has been misrepresented and will clear his name through the courts.

“Ruben is the victim of fraud, which is likely to be financial, although explaining the situation at the moment is not easy,” Balde is cited as saying by Marca.

“It is fair to say that in this circumstance he has not acted correctly but ultimately he is the victim, and reports on Spanish TV are really bad and not representative.

“The alleged kidnapping never took place, there was no kidnapping and no torture, it was not Ruben’s gun that was found in his house.

“We will know more and be able to explain more after the court hearing, it will become clear.”

Semedo joined Villarreal from Sporting CP in the summer for €14m but has played only four league games due to his season being disrupted by injuries.
