RFEF open Pique investigation

The competition committee of the Spanish FA (RFEF) have confirmed they have opened an investigation into Gerard Pique’s celebration at Espanyol.

Earlier this month, the Spain international netted a late equaliser for the Blaugrana in the Catalan derby and went over to the home fans with a ‘shushing’ gesture.

ESPN have now reported the RFEF have confirmed they are opening a “classified investigation process” into the incident at the RCDE Stadium.

Espanyol had not reported the incident, but had complained about the defender calling them Espanyol from Cornella (the area in which their stadium is located) rather than Espanyol from Barcelona – their official title.

La Liga president Javier Tebas had called the incident ‘provocative’ but reiterated he would not be part of any decision process, which could land the defender with a suspension from playing.
