Atletico Madrid captain Gabi Fernandez has already put pen to paper on a new contract with the club, according to CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin.
The 34-year-old midfielder’s contract at Estadio Wanda Metropolitano expires in June 2018 but despite his advancing years he is still a key member of the team.
“The renewal of Gabi is already complete and he has committed for a long time,” Marin told Spanish radio show El Transistor on Thursday evening.
The midfield is in his second spell with Atleti – interrupted by a four-year stint at Real Zaragoza – and has started 30 or more league games for each of the past six seasons, with 14 starts this time around.
When signing his last renewal, in October 2016, he had remarked: “I always say that playing with Atletico Madrid was my childhood dream, so I cannot ask for more than what I am living these years.”
