Joaquin extends Betis contract

Real Betis captain Joaquin has signed a two-year extension to his contract to take him up to the summer of 2020, it has been confirmed.

The former Spain international is in his 18th season as a professional and is enjoying his second stint at his boyhood club having returned from Fiorentina in 2015.

The new deal will see the winger remain at Los Verdiblancos until June 2020, taking him beyond his 39th birthday and ensuring he will be in the club’s first team squad for a total of 11 seasons across two spells.

Joaquin has started 16 La Liga matches this season and has netted three goals with his form being widely lauded.

Earlier this month, he bought over €1m worth of shares in the club – to become the fourth biggest shareholder in Betis – and announced he would one day like to become club president.
