Zinedine Zidane insists Real Madrid are not ‘desperate’ after their 0-0 draw with Athletic Bilbao but admits “we’re eight points behind due to our lack of goals.”
The result saw Madrid not only drop points for the sixth time in La Liga but also fail to score on a third occasion – in stark contrast to last season, when they found the net in every match.
“Last season, there were games that we won in the last minute, and we’re not doing that this year,” the Coach said after the game.
“I’m not worried. I’m disappointed for the players. My job is to make sure that we’re positive and to think that by playing well, the goals will come.
“I was happy with our performance and execution. We put in huge effort and only lacked the goal.
“I’m very happy for the match we had and very disappointed that we didn’t score, especially for the players. They gave everything. We deserved more.
“Ramos sent off? He’s not happy. He didn’t think it was a red card, but we can’t change it. I’m very disappointed because we did everything to win.
“We deserved more and we didn’t score a goal. We played very well and had chances, but the ball didn’t want to go in.
“I’m disappointed for the effort my players put in, but we can’t change it. We must continue with the same mentality and think about the next game.
“Scoring is the hardest thing to do. We had chances, but they didn’t go in. We can’t avoid what happened.
“It’s difficult for the players because I know that things will change. I’m certain they will.
“We’re eight points behind due to our lack of goals, that’s why. We’ve deserved much more than we have.
“We’re not desperate. We could’ve cut the deficit with three points, and it would’ve been phenomenal.
“Still, we’ll get another chance to cut it again. The solution is to work hard. There’s no need to think further. That’s the important thing.
“We have to think that we’ll get more opportunities, no more than that. It’s not a problem to have three teams ahead of us, it’s the reality.
“There are still six months left of the season. They’re ahead of us because they deserve to be, but the season is still long.”
