Zidane defends Madrid players

Zinedine Zidane insists “I’m not annoyed at all” with Real Madrid’s struggles against third-tier Fuenlabrada in the Copa del Rey.

Madrid reached the last 16 on Tuesday but not without difficulty as Gareth Bale was needed off the bench to assist Borja Mayoral with his brace in a 2-2 draw.

“I’m not annoyed at all, it was planned,” the Coach said after the game.

“It wasn’t not easy for the players, a lot of them were ‘canteranos’, but I’m happy that we’ve gone through.

“Our opponents had a very good game, but the important thing is that we went through.

“Demands? I’m looking at my players, those who were on the pitch. We did well in the second half, so I’m happy.

“Poor performance? The fans can say whatever they want, but they also saw their players fight until the end.

“There were players who hadn’t played together. Our opponents didn’t play like a Segunda B team. Fuenlabrada are a good team.

“Bale? We’re in the last 16, that’s it. I’m happy for Gareth, Keylor and Mateo [Kovacic]. We went through and that’s what we wanted.

“Keylor? I saw him well and happy. He’s an important player, like the others who returned. He had a good game and I don’t think he could’ve done more with the first goal.”
